Hello Friends!
I was talking about creativity last week and I had a revelation: Creativity isn’t a skill or a talent. Creativity Is A Place! It is a place I visit to make things: paintings, fancy meals, difficult decisions.
Creativity is a village filled with happy people up on a sunny hillside, not so far from here. It looks like Stars Hollow from the TV show Gilmore Girls - where quirky people pass each other on the way to knitting contests, dance marathons and historical reenactments. There are costume parties for pets and little kids dancing like daisies. There is lots of laughter and some days it’s so loud you can hear it in the nearby villages of Practice, Play and Persistence.
Visiting Creativity requires a bit of work though. Think about it. How many times have you tried to find Creativity and gotten lost in Perfectionism? Ugh. I hate when that happens! I have to walk through the towns of Depressing Failure and Frustration on my way to Creativity. That was a hard journey at first, but it’s easier now because I have a good map and I know the shortcuts.
To create art we all have to get ourself to Creativity. So, next time you take out your sketchbook or your paints, map out your route. Think about where you might get lost and plan ahead - maybe bring a friend along or take a guided tour first to learn the terrain. And remember - if you get lost, don’t freak out or keep wandering in Frustration. Stop and ask for directions!
